Well, it depends on how long the person has been away, what you mean by greeting, and who the people in the house are.

If you've been gone for 15 minutes, and the people in your house are unwanted government lackeys or something, then you could get away with a "who are you?" or a nod as you walk by, and probably not be considered rude. If you have been gone for 9 years and the people in your house are your closest friends, then yeah, it would probably be rude to not at least say hi.

In any case though, there are circumstances, like being hurt or tired, and different people have different levels of social skills, and most friends would make allowance or understand that. Others will consider it rude, or choose different friends. In any case, it is both sides that need to be engaged in making a relationship work, whether it be trying to reach out more, or whether it is being more tolerant and understanding.
