It seems like a very gory way to go. It might be a metaphor for being heartbroken. It also might be a parting message - that the deceased person was actually in a lot of (mentally and/or physical) pain even though they didn't let on. They also might have felt that they deserved a dramatic way for them to go by watching themselves bleed out. It could also be that they believed it was the most irreversible method.
