It helps if you know if the medal was issued to someone in a certain military branch because they list all the medals for each branch of the military.
687 Pour le Merites were awarded during WW1. Many of the winners were killed during the war. The link below has a list of the winners. In order to find out if they survived the war, you will need to search German archives for details. Listing all their names is beyond the scope of this site.
You can't, no one wins anything in war! You are AWARDED a medal or decoration. All you civilians out there; let that sink in. That is a tremendous difference and that difference means a lot to us. Basically, it has to do with the memory of those "who are forever young", for in this "game" not everyone is alive when it's over. Other than that, Google it.

There are many websites (some official) that list all Medal of Honor recipients. Do a websearch by simply typing in Medal of Honor. I suggest this only because there were 96 recipients from WWI - TOO MANY to list.
