The march, published in 1923, was titled " March of the Mitten March" before it was retitled "Power and Glory". The "Mitten" referred to is Mr. Thomas Mitten, CEO of the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company, which transported thousands of people to and from Willow Grove Park in suburban Philly during the years when the Sousa Band was doing lengthy summer engagements there from 1901-1926, 1911 excepted (they were on a world tour then). The title was changed to "Power and Glory' as the result of the publisher of the second edition, who thought the new title would sell better--apparently he was right.
It has been suggested that the name was changed because of a falling out between Mitten and Sousa, but the dedication to Mitten remained even after the march was renamed, and the Sousa Band continued to play at Willow Grove after the edition called "Power and Glory" came out.
