The men in "Platoon" appeared to be fighting the NVA (North Viet Army) and not the local VC (Viet Cong). Laying in ambush patrols and patrolling contested areas. The NVA were regular soldiers (drafted, basic training, chain of command, and uniformed, often wearing OD (Olive Drab) colored pith helmets). The local VC were just guerrillas; store clerk or farmer by day, guerrilla at night.
US were trained in conventional warfare whereas the Viet Cong used guerilla tactics - hitting the enemy and then moving away; not wearing a standard uniform; merging into village life with ease etc. It was difficult for these young American troops to know who was the enemy and who they could trust amongst the South Vietnamese population. America had total control of the air. Planes could be used to back-up ground troops by using napalm. Defoliation chemicals were also used to destroy the jungle cover given to the Viet Cong along the Ho Chi Minh trail. Agent Orange killed large areas of jungle disguising this trail but those using it, simply moved further inland or further into Laos thus avoiding the defoliated areas.
It was CS gas, which is a type of tear gas, that was used against those in tunnels in the Viet Nam conflict. It did not "suck oxygen" out of the tunnels, because there was nothing that would do that. Instead, the CS directly affected the occupants. Use the link below to learn more.
The Tet Offensive was a military action taken by the Viet Cong against the United States military in the Vietnam War. It began on the Tet, or the Vietnamese new year. Viet Cong soldiers stormed a very large number of US strongholds, outposts, and guarded locations. Within a week, all of this areas had been retaken by the United States military. The success of the Tet Offensive has been questioned by many historians and military strategists. The Tet offensive was a very important turn of events in the Vietnam war. Although it was considered a military loss for the Viet Cong, it was definitely a political victory. The Viet Cong lost nearly half of their soldiers. This completely crippled their ability to take on the United Sates militarily. However, military force has never been the only weapon in war. This attack convinced the American people that the US was losing. Americans weren't and still aren't used to thinking our military can be defeated. The Tet offensive startled many Americans because it displayed how unprepared we were. Even if the entire Viet Cong army was destroyed, they still would have triumphed from the Tet offensive, because the political impact far outweighed the military impact.
probably the flamethrower because it was never used before then and has never really been used again The Flamethrower was used quite a bit during the Vietnam war because of the Viet Cong and NVA tunnels, and fortifications in the jungles.
an elaborate system of tunnels
True
The Viet Cong were insurgents and terrorists in South Vietnam, who supported the North Vietnamese Army. While the North Vietnamese Army fought in direct combat from the north, the Viet Cong used guerilla warfare and insurgency tactics to interrupt operations in the south.
NVA (North Vietnamese Army) and VC (Viet Cong) were known as "Reds" or "Commies" to GIs.
Pro-communist rebels, and similar rebellion factions, used similar tactics, as their Viet Cong neighbors in South Vietnam, e.g. hit and run guerrilla tactics, land mines, etc.
Vietcong forces used small engagements and ambushes to wear down American troops.
In the Vietnam War the US opposed the invasion of South Korea by North Korea. The fighters from North Korea, who used guerilla tactics, were known as the Viet Cong.
The Viet Cong, were the Vietnamese soldiers who were fighting to help the Communist faction of the country during the Vietnam War. They operated largely through guerilla warfare, using the cover of night and dense jungle to make fighting them almost impossible. They also practiced extreme methods of torture when they captured an enemy solider, and used women and children with bombs attached to them to kill unsuspecting people.

The Australians had a completely different approach to the Vietnam war. The standard American forces employed a search and destroy methodology, in which the role of US infantry was to establish enemy contact, and then call upon Air or Artillery to decimate the enemy. Australians on the other hand used counter-insurgency, counter ambush methods. These involved much use of stealth to suprise the enemy, and therefore overwhelm them. The Viet Cong were an unconventional force accostomed to fighting conventional armies, and the Australians fought unconventionally. Really, the forces that the Viet Cong feared the most were the ROK (Republic of Korea) marines. Document sources say that Viet Cong Commanders advised against engaging ROK unless no other option presented itself.
The North Vietnamese army, otherwise known as Viet-Cong/Viet-Minh, often used guerilla tactics, for example hide from the US troops and only attack without direct combat, however the notorious 'Tet Offensive' was a contradiction of this rule, as they did attack the US troops, air-bases and embassy, though in body count this was not in fact a success.
