An army's guns are generally stored in an armory. These areas are often heavily guarded. They can hold guns, ammunition, and other weapons.
Both are equally as good as each other. They both have their specialist areas.
The northern army was the US Army. The southern army was the Army of the Confederate States. Actually though, the southerners intended to create a "regular" army just like the northern one, but never really got around to it, with just a few hundred officers holding commissions as regular officer of the ACS, and only a few thousand men enlisted in "Confederate" regiments. Most regiments, north and south, were raised by the states, and were not considered part of the regular army. Southern units like this were part of the "Provisional Army of the Confederate States" (PACS) and northern units were "US Volunteers" (USV). Each side had several field armies, intended to operate in a certain area. The southerners named theirs after geographic areas, the northerners named theirs after rivers, or the most prominent body of water in its area of of operations. The most famous southern armies were the Army of Northern Virginia (commanded by Robert E. Lee) and the Army of Tennessee, which had several commanders. Northern armies included the Army of the Potomac (opposed Lee), the Army of the James, the Army of the Tennessee, the Army of the Cumberland, the Army of the Ohio, and others.

Major tactical operations, battles, and engagements are primarily conducted at the division level and higher in the army. Divisions, which typically consist of several brigades, are responsible for executing coordinated operations across larger areas and integrating various combat arms. Higher echelons, such as corps and army commands, provide strategic direction and resources necessary to support these operations.
