The war in Vietnam was a civil war. North Vietnam(Communists being supplied by China and the USSR) vs South Vietnam(A democracy). The US trying to stop the spread of communism without direct war with the USSR. Moved in to support the the south. The US and the South Vietnese Army(SVA) made great progress against the North Vietnese Army(NVA). However they had a great deal of trouble fighting the Viet Cong(VC), the guerrilla forces of the NVA. The US's involvement ended around 1972 when the US government pulled out do to the public greatly speaking out against it. The US lost about 50,000 men. But the NVA lost more than 1 million. 3 years after the Americans pulled out the NVA defeated the SVA and Vietnam has been united as 1 communist country ever since.

After Vietnam became united as one COMMUNIST VIETNAM country, the US delayed relationships with that nation until the end of the cold war. With the ending of the cold war, trade relationships exist between the US and Vietnam; not a big trade relationship, but an exchange of goods, none the less.
