There were no US Marines on the BEACHES at Normandy. There were marine snipers on the highest points on the ships firing at badly placed mines and MG nests along the beach. There were marines operating the main guns on the ships.

Oddly, US Marines were not used in the amphibious landings in the Mediterranean, Sicily, Italy, Normandy nor Southern France. And for most of the Pacific amphibious landings, the Marines were used most of the time and not the US Army. Kinda odd.

The US Army fought more because there were more of them, but the US Marines also fought against the Germans in France.
General MacArthur strategy to defeat Japan would go through the occupied islands held by Japan. The Marines had amphibious training. So it made sense for MacArthur to utilize the Marines to defeat Japan. So the Marines did not have a unit at the invasion of Normandy.
