Just like today, there is no universal feeling. Some people were frightened, some people were angry, some people were annoyed, some were confident, and some did not pay attention to the Cold War.

∙ 14y agoPeople reacted in various ways. Some took it seriously and with apprehension, while others were in denial and did not want to discuss it or recognize it. News events made it impossible to ignore, but Cold War events became a part of the background noise. It was a price to be paid for the modern times in which they lived, and nothing could be done about it. Some individuals wanted unilateral disarmament and more dialogue with the adversary, but most people saw this approach as unrealistic. Many expected a third world war with nuclear weapons in their lifetime, and a conflict on the other side of the world could heighten this belief. The Cold War was not something that citizens thought about consciously on a daily basis, but it was always there subconsciously.
