Well. There is an answer to this. But I don't know what it is.

The South wanted Slavery, and the North did not. After the war with Mexico, there really was no where else for southern farmers to expand to, so fighting broke out.

One way the south and North differed in the years before the war was the lifestyle itself.

North was more industrialized, they used immigrants as the main way of getting money.

The south was more laid back aguaculture. They preferred the Good Ol' Slave over the immigrant.

North vs. South

Before the Civil War, the North and South led different lives. The North had an industrial economy, and the South's economy was focused on agriculture, mostly because of geography. There were also speeches made about state and federal authority, and the doctrine of nullification and secession received attention.

  • Boundaries: The free states were in the North, including Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and New York. The slave states were in the South, including Texas, Missouri, Kentucky, and Virginia.
  • North: The North's economy relied on industry, in the form of factories and mills. Most of the terrain was rough and the soil was not fertile, which kept a majority of people in the North from farming. They also had a large import/export industry through Boston and other ports.
  • South: The South's economy relied on agriculture. The fertile soil and mostly flat land allowed large plantations to grow crops like cotton, tobacco, rice, and sugar. Slavery was the main source of labor, and southern states feared their economy would fall if slavery was abolished.
