Texas troops fought in every theater. A Texas brigade was one of the best in Lee's Army, in the east. The other main Rebel Army, the Army of Tennessee, fought in what was called the west, but was the area between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River. There were several Texas Brigades that fought with this army. The area west of the Mississippi River was called the Trans-Mississippi, and a lot of Texans fought there, close to home. This theater of the war was largely cut off from the east after Vicksburg fell in the summer of 1863, and was pretty much on its own. General Edmund Kirby Smith was in command of Confederate forces in the Trans-Mississippi, and since he was largely autonomous, having to do what he alone thought best, it was sometimes called "Kirby Smithdom".
