Time and again, especially in the West, Confederate forces would drive back the Federals early in the battle, but, almost invariably, the North would receive fresh reinforcements by railroad or steamboat, counterattack, and turn the tide of battle in their favor. This was a kind of microcosm for the whole war as well. The South made initial headway, but, once the Union armies were trained and the industrial juggernaut was moving at full speed, the North's resources completely overwhelmed the South.
Age and declining health and injury owing to falls are the probable causes of Mary Todd Lincoln's death. Later in life, she lost much of her sight to cataracts, and thus became prone to injury. She sustained a spinal cord injury in a fall (off a step ladder) in 1879, and spent the last few years of her life in bed at her sister's home. She died in 1882 on July 16th. Henry Osborn King (H.O. King), born in Wolvercote in1861 and died in 1946, hymn- tune writer and a big figure in Wolvercote, Oxford, composed the tune 'Wolvercote'. He thought Ferguson, organist at St. Edward's school nearby might like to see it. According to the family, they did not like to make a fuss when Ferguson claimed it for his own when he had moved to Lancing School. The Wolvercote Local History Society would like to hear from anyone who knows anything to the contrary or more informaton. Prsident, Wolvercote Local History Society
No. Only the seven states of the deep south seceded before Lincoln was inaugurated. There were South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, Texas and Georgia. After the Confederates fired on Fort Sumter Lincoln called on the states for volunteer soldiers "to suppress the rebellion". This put the other southern states to the choice of helping Lincoln subdue their neighbors and relatives, or of joining with their relatives and neighbors in fighting the north. Tennessee, Arkansas, Virginia and North Carolina seceded in the next few weeks. Missouri would have seceded but was foiled by quick-acting Union military personnel. Maryland would have seceded but Lincoln had the governor and members of the legislature imprisoned. After what happened to Maryland, tiny Delaware did not try. Kentucky declared "neutrality" and tried to stay out of it, but sooner or later one side or the other would anger the Kentuckians. This turned out to be the Confederates, so Kentucky did not secede, though about one-third of Kentuckians who fought in the war fought for the south. Many Marylanders also fought for the south.
