The former Cold War wasn't quite as "cold" as it once was (though neither side invited each other over for a family picnic and and a sleepover / pj party). Seriously, after 9-11, the uppermost issues were about protecting the US mainland, bringing troops home fast(er), critical debate over human rights and torturing prisoners, and wrongfully suspecting and profiling anyone who looked, dressed, or sounded Middle Eastern as being a potential terrorist.
