Confederates - by far. Sumter was a tiny garrison, and although Lincoln was planning to keep it supplied, there was no realistic prospect of manning it strongly enough to resist the Confederate troops.

How big is fort sumer?

It's a little more complicated than that. Fort Sumter sits in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina. After the election of Abraham Lincoln, South Carolina seceded from the Union (the first to do so) and with six other states, created the Confederate States of America. Lincoln declared secession to be legally void, and maintained possession of federal property. Fort Sumter was a US fort; as such, it was a federal property. It was also inside the Confederacy. At the time that the "first battle of the Civil War" occurred at Fort Sumter, the fort was a "Union fort". The fort surrendered, however, and was held by the Confederacy throughout the duration of the war.

What year did six more states secede and Lincoln takes office. Fort Sumter remains one of two southern forts under union control?

How did fort Sumter influence the war?

How did the Civil War start?

The US Civil War began on 12 April 1861 at 4:30 am when confederate forces in Charleston, south Carolina, fired on Union forces holding Fort Sumter, which was a Federal Fort located in Charleston Harbor. The bombardment lasted 34 hours and resulted in Union evacuation and takeover of the Fort by the Confederacy. One Union soldier died after the battle while firing a cannon salute as part of the evacuation. One Confederate soldier bled to death after being wounded by a misfiring cannon during the battle.Although most of the Confederate states had declared their secession from the Union before the Battle of Ft. Sumter, no shots had been fired, the mail continued to be delivered in both directions, as did telegraph messages and rail service. After Sumter was captured, the Union increased its military strength to recapture the fort, so the war continued and expanded. To this point the problem was a "rebellion". The Confederacy did not recognize that a state of war existed until later. The Confederate Congress passed an act on May 6, 1861 that a state of war between the Union and the Confederacy. The US Supreme Court ruled the Civil War began in July, when Lincoln addressed Congress and asked for more troops and funding for the war.the civil war started when the south and the north kept arguing and they got further apart and then they had a big fight clled the civil war.

How strong was the Confederate reinforcement of Charleston Harbor?

After the Confederate capture of Fort Sumter, it became a frequent target of Union attempts to "pay back" the South for its takeover of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Perhaps no fort in the US Civil War endured the pressures of being a gateway to the South. By the time the Union was serious about retaking the fort, the Rebels had greatly strengthened the fort that protected Charleston and its harbor. More cannons were added to the fort and all points within the harbor had allot of artillery and fortifications. For example, when on April 7, 1863, Union warships steamed into the harbor where they passed a number of buoys which the Rebels used as range markers for their artillery. Once the US flotilla was in range the Confederates, with great accuracy fired over 2,000 shots in the two hour battle that ensued. The Union ships managed to return fire with only 154 shots. This was one episode in the Union's attempt to take over Fort Sumter and the harbor. More agtempts would be tried again.
