General Patton
Brigadier General James Edward Oglethorpe was not killed during the attack on Savannah; rather, it was Brigadier General John McIntosh who was a notable figure in the defense of the city. The French General who defended Verdun in 1916 was General Nivelle. Nivelle planned and executed an attack against the Germans.
They went to Quebec on boats and General Wolfe led a surprise attack leaving the French startled. General Wolfe dying, a soldier said, "We won."
General Wolfe's troops scaled the bluffs opposite Quebec to surprise the French forces on the Plains of Abraham.
On May 19, 1940, the French government replaced the head of the French army, General Gamelin, with General Weygand. Gamelin had failed to calculate the German attack effectively and by May 19th France needed new leadership.
In the battle of Fredericksburg, General Burnsides had General Hooker attack at one end of a 15 mile line and General Meade attack at the other end. General Hooker's attack failed miserably. General Meade's attack succeeded at first, but General Stonewall Jackson had prepared for such a situation and developed the technique of "Defence in Depth." General Meade was not ready for that and his front line had to withdraw. Since the Union Army was spread out over such a long stretch, General Burnside had been unable to send reinforcements to General Meade when it would have brought a Union victory.

Fort Duquesne
Ferdinand Foch - supposedly sent to General Joffre at the Battle of Marne :- "My centre is giving way, my right is in retreat, situation excellent. I shall attack" (J'attaque). There are other versions, the above one was quoted by Liddell Hart but may be based more on his Counter Attack based philosophy espoused to his troops than the actual words.
It wasn't a British General it was General George Washington and later on he set up Fort Necessity which was later sieged by the French until George Washington surrendered.
