The Battle of Coral Sea, fought in May 1942, was crucial for the United States as it marked the first significant halt to Japanese expansion in the Pacific during World War II. This naval engagement, fought primarily by aircraft from carriers, demonstrated the effectiveness of carrier-based operations and showcased the importance of air power in naval warfare. The battle also provided valuable intelligence and strategic insights that would influence future engagements, such as the Battle of Midway, ultimately turning the tide in favor of the Allies in the Pacific theater.

Battle of Coral Sea, 7-8 May 1942; Japanese tactical victory, however it was a major US strategic victory Battle of Midway, 4 June 1942; decisive US tactical & strategic victory
None. This was a naval battle involving sailors and marines. The Navy lost 537 men killed in action and 6 died from wounds received in the battle. One sailor was captured by the Japanese and died as a POW and 11 were released from service due to their injuries. In addition, 19 Marines died in action and 2 died of wounds.
The Battle of the Coral Sea is regarded as a tactical victory for the Japanese and a strategic victory for the US. It was a tactical victory for Japan because the US lost one of its very few large fleet aircraft carriers, and had another damaged, while the Japanese lost only one light carrier. It was a strategic victory for the US because it caused the Japanese to abandon their plan to land and capture Port Moresby, New Guinea, from whence they could interrupt sea lanes to Australia, and perhaps mount an invasion of Australia. After the Battle the invasion fleet sailing several hundred miles behind the Japanese battle fleet turned around. This was the first time the Japanese had been turned back from a planned conquest. It was also the first battle at sea ever in which the opposing fleets never caught sight of one another, with all the blows struck by airplanes (or submarines operating on their own). The Battle of the Coral Sea also set the stage for the Battle of Midway the following month.
