ration was there because during world war two there wasnt enough supplies to go around so they shared. they gave everyone a fair amount so that they wouldn't run out. you would get very little but it was to last you a week.

people had a ration book and ration coupons. every time they went out to collect there supplies they would take out there ration coupons and they would be stamped to show you had collected your supplies from the shop and that you don't keep coming back for more.
