The position of Prime Minister is not legally defined. As such, anyone could be Prime Minister for any period of time. However, by convention, the Prime Minister is a Member of Parliament. Members of Parliament must be Canadian citizens of the age of majority (18 years). There are no requirements for birthplace.

Certain people are prohibited from being elected as members of parliament. This includes prisoners, people who have committed election crimes within the past five years, elections officials, judges, senators, sheriffs, crown attorneys, and members of provincial and territorial legislatures.
