There are 4 types of violin, the violin (of course) the viola, the cello, and the bass. But you can view it from a different angle, there is a 1/4, 2/4, 3/4 and a full violin, electric violin, and the Chinese violin which is called erhu

The viola, cello and bass are not types of violins, they are separate instruments. They also can be found in 1/16, 1/10, 1/8, 7/8 and the 2/4 is referred to as a 1/2. The Erhu is also a separate instrument. So really there is only two kind of violins, the acoustic and electric.

There are seven standard sizes: 4/4, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, and 1/32. 4/4 (called a "full size") is the largest and is usually an appropriate size for players age 12 and above. Smaller sizes, such as 1/8, 1/16, or 1/32 are used for very small, very young players.
