There are 7 pulleys to put it over or under on the 4.0. The ridged side of the belt goes on the ridged pulleys, the smooth side of the belt goes on the smooth pulleys. The ridged side is 'inside' the loop made by the fan. So starting on the left (facing the truck) The upper left corner pulley (AC Compressor) OVER Directly under that, low, the alternator UNDER OVER the fan UNDER the motor INSIDE the tensioner OVER the Power Steering pump UNDER the water pump Another way to put it: So the two large, center pulleys are the water pump and the motor. It is on the bottom of both of these. The top two on left and right, respectively are the AC Compressor and the power steering pump. it is on top of these. The remaining two pulleys are on the left; a small one low is the alternator which the belt runs on the bottom. The other is the fan which the belt runs over the top. Make sure the tensioner pushes the belt IN TOWARD THE WATER PUMP as you tighten it.

If it has antifreeze on it you may have to replace it. I have shot some WD40 on MANY serp belts and had good luck. This will NOT hurt the belt regardless of what many 'experts' may say. Over the years I've had similar problems, both with conventional "v" belts and serpentine belts. In the "old days," rubbing "bar" soap on the belt[s] would do the job. Do NOT ATTEMPT to do this with the engine running. Be certain the engine is OFF, and I suggest, ALSO COOL to eleminate the potential for burns to hands or arms. I don't know exactly how it works, but I suspect that the soap acts as a lubricant. Also, I have had success by removing and reinstalling the serpentine belt, "reversing" it so that it travels in the opposite direction. As indicated in answer 1, WD-40 also has worked for me.j3h.

timing chains don't squeal, they rattle and growl. the serpentine belt may squeal if the belt is worn. to check for a worn belt, locate the belt so that you can see the ribbed side clearly. anymore then 5 cracks per inch on any one of the ribs is considered worn and should be replaced. if the ribbed side is in good shape, the flat side should be examined. it should be dull in appearance. If the belt is shiney it should be replaced. recommended replacement on a serpentine belt is every 40-60k miles. if you are in this range, or passed it, and havent replaced the belt, now is the time to do it. serpentine belts can stretch over time. Another cause of a squeal may be a faulty pully someware on the engine. mostly the Idler pully, located just under the motor mount, or the belt tentioner pully, or the belt tentioner assembly as a whole, located just down and to the left from the idler pully. Easy way to check belt tention is to locate the portion of the belt running from your air conditioner to the idler pully, using two fingers, press down on the belt with some force. if your belt tentioner moves more then 1/4 of an inch its time to replace it.
