Yes, that is the most basic answer to the question..but, I played in an orchestra (played Trumpet of course) and at a personal stand point, I think the trumpet adds a brighter and "fuller" sound for the orchestra. Any brass instrument would do this, but the trumpet originally has a brighter sound.

The trumpet is a standard component of the brass section of an orchestra; the classical orchestra has two trumpets (no fixed key), the modern orchestra has three, keyed in C.

Other types of orchestra, such as the romantics, have other arrangements.

Any non-standard instrument can be included in an orchestra, as a soloist or as part of the ensemble (think of the live cannons in some performances of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture).

For the same reasons any other instrument is important. An orchestra needs trumpets in order to play the music written for trumpet in each piece.

It all depends on the ensemble and piece, but a trumpet can be melody, harmony, solo's, or even backgrounds.

A trumpet is a soprano instrument so it tends to play the melody and its harmonies most of the time. However it is also used for backing to the theme when other sections are playing it.
