It differed. I think it was mainly New Wave-Pop-Dance That's correct, and another big style was 80's rock, often times sung by what was known as "hair bands", i.e. Poison, Motley Crue, White Snake, Skid Row, Steel Heart. The 80's also gave birth to what was known as the Monster Ballad. Monster Ballads were sung by hair bands, who's typical music was rock or hard rock. Monster Ballads were typically slower than the usual rock songs these bands would sing and often times were love songs with a slow rock overtone.

The 1980's are known for Pop Music (like Madonna and Michael Jackson), and for Heavy Metal going from underground to mainstream (like Metallica, and Motley Crue).

When the 1980's began, Disco was in full swing, and Punk Rock was just getting rolling, and was virtually the birth of Rap music (and it was the birth of Gangsta Rap specifically).

The birth of MTV and the music video, really made a change to how pop music was considered. Groups that made videos got popular fast, so genres like New Wave were more popular because of this.
