All of my 93 to 98 gc's do that, it's called a courtesy feature.
my 95 jeep cherokee does this aswell, i heard that it is from a door switch not contacting or the BCM can be out, im going to try and replace the door switches first hope this helps!
Check the switches on your doors, one of those may have gone bad or broken off.
If you turn up your interior dashboard light settings, then the radio display will be brighter too. The radio dims to the setting for the dashboard when the lights are turned on.
KICK PANEL BY YOUR LEFT FOOT DRIVERS SIDE. ALSO POSSIBLE EXTERNAL UNDER HOOD IN LONG BLACK JUNCTION BOX.
intermitten problems are the worst to figure out i would first start by changing the bulbs then i would change the wiring harness. i know i had a car that when the tail lights were on the blinkers wouldn't work and it turned out to be a short in the harness.
It is supposed to be turned on as soon as they activate the lights to pull you over. Most are automatically activated when the car stops or the lights are turned on.
I had the same problem, and it turned out to be a short in the wiring. Mine had the Cruise Control located in the steering wheel and when I turned it off...the lights worked fine.
Check to see if the interior lights are switched "ON" Sometimes they get turned on when you move the headlight switch.

pretty easy really, make sure your interior lights are not turned on. Your headlights control should also be the interior light controller. Turn it clockwise or counterclockwise to turn your interior lights off. You'll run your battery down if you dont
You probably turned them on by accident. They are controlled with the same pull switch that turns on the headlights. By twisting the switch to the far left it will click and the dome lights will turn on, by twisting it to the right it will turn off the interior lights and will then dim the dashboard lights.
Perhaps you turned on the interior lights when you were adjusting the headlights?
In a 1997 Lincoln Continental : To the right of your headlight switch in the dash is a ( panel dim ) switch I believe if that is turned all the way up then the interior lights will come on
First thing you want to check is the dimmer switch to see if it is turned all the way down.
On your light switch there is a dimmer for the dash lights . if you turn it all the way to the left your interior lights should come on , turn it to the left and see if that works otherwise it might be a door switch .
Press dome override button 3 or 4 times till you here a beep to put headlights and interior lights back on auto
The switch is probably bad or you aren't turning the knob all the way off.
The dimmer switch when turned just past high, turns on the interior lights. There are switches in the door opening that turns the lights off when the door is closed. Either one of these can cause the lights to stay on if they fail.
you didnt specify year, but its time delayed electronically. Assuming they do eventually turn off, all is well. It's 1995 Cadillac Concours the interior lights, and head lights go out when I cut the car off but the dashboard lights stay on.
