Step 1) use a magnet to remove the iron filings

Step 2) dump the mixture into water hot water and mix (this will cause the salt to combine with the water and the styrofoam to float)

Step 3) you can now separate the styrofoam from the top of the water

Step 4) using a fine mesh strain the sand out of the water

Step 5) boil the water leaving the salt.

Put the mixture in a funnel with filter paper. Add water to dissolve the salt. The salt water will pass through the filter and can be collected in a beaker. Then the water can be evaporated, leaving the salt behind. Place the mixture of pebbles and iron filings on a flat surface. Use a magnet to remove the iron filings from the pebbles.
