A queen will mate with up to 15 drones whereupon they die and she stores enough sperm in her spermathecum to lay up to 2000 eggs a day in the season for up to five years. Drones are ejected by the workers in autumn when they no longer have a useful purpose and will only deplete the winter honey stores.
