∙ 12y agoA standard home hot water tank will need a two conductor #12 cable connected to a 20 amp breaker to operate according to the electrical code. This will allow the circuit to be loaded to 3840 watts. The heating elements in a hot water tank are rated at 2500 watts each but the thermostat only allows one of them to be on at any one time. They alternate between the top and bottom elements. When the top element reaches temperature it will shut off and the bottom one will turn on. This constant cycling will continue until the water is up to temperature and then they will both turn off.
