cats lick themselves because that is how they bath themself. even know they bath themself doesn't mean you shouldn't give them baths. we give my four cats real baths like once every four months. and we have this foam stuff that you put on your hands rub it in and rub it on your cat(s) then you brush them and you are finished. we do that like once in every one or two weeks.
