In my opinion,
This idiom uses basic laws of gravity to convey the point that you can't always be on the up and up, no matter who you are or what you are doing. Eventually you will fall back to the ground.
For example,
You win 10 hands of Blackjack in a row. You are on dopamine high, and you are thrilled with the reality of winning so much money. So, you push your luck and bet everything on Roulette in the prospect of getting even more chips. Then you lose everything. You are brought back down to earth, and it is a sobering feeling.
This idiom is a yin & yang approach to things. For the good, their is a bad.
