If properly manufactured, your speakers should show the rated power they are capable of handling, not just the impedance on the boxes. The total power necessary for an average Home Theater is 100 watts per channel, so a 7.1 receiver should have a maximum output of 700 watts, a 5.1 receiver 500 watts.
It physically can but that is like putting the wrong amount of water through the wrong size pipe. It will work for awhile but something is going to give. In your case that risk involves a fire hazard. I wouldn't do it.

Wattage is the amount of sound a speaker can pump out. More wattage means the speaker will be louder, but won't necessarily sound better.
