On 29 June 1613, during a performance of Henry VIII, wadding from a stage cannon ignited the thatched roof and the theatre burned to the ground 'all in less than two hours, the people having enough to do to save themselves'. Fortunately no lives were lost.
It's more of a "How?" question: the Globe Theatre burned during a miss fired canon in one of the performances. It set the roof on fire and from the top down it was completely inflamed!

I have not heard of, and cannot find a reference to a theatre called "William Shakespeare Theatre" which is odd, considering how important Shakespeare was to the theatre. There is a theatre called the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon which was so named in 1961. It replaced an earlier theatre called the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre which burned down March 6, 1926.

My class and I went on a tour of the new Globe Theater and, if I heard correctly, the tour guide mentioned that the Globe did not burn down in the great fire. It burnt down some time before the great fire occurred.
