In a gas, for a given amount of matter, density absolutely depends on volume. For liquids and solids, they occupy given volumes, and it is necessary extraordinarily strong compressions to induce even a modest change in volume. However, solids and liquids are somewhat susceptible to temperature and density does depend slightly on it.

To determine the density of a material one measures the mass and volume of a sample of it and then divides that mass by that volume. If one were to have taken twice as big a sample then the mass would be twice as big and so would the volume; therefore, the density would be the same. You can see that the size makes no difference. If the material were soft enough you could probably mould the sample with your hands to have a somewhat different shape. But the mass of the sample would be the same and so would its volume; hence, the density would be the same too.

of a battleship made of the same steel.

Density means weight per unit of volume. So a large object that weighs ten pounds is not as dense as a smaller object that also weighs ten pounds.

What is the density of a rectangle?

A rectangle is just a geometric shape; it doesn't have a "density".A material shaped like a rectangle can have a density; in this case, the density will depend on what material you are using.

The magnetic properties of a material depend on its?

The magnetic properties of a material depend on its atomic structure.

How does shape differ density?

If you use a homogenous (uniform) material, it doesn't. No matter what shape you put it into, the density should be the same.If you use a homogenous (uniform) material, it doesn't. Does the pressure of a liquid depend on its density?

Density is an intrinsic property, and as such it does not depend on the size of the object. A drop of water will have a density of 1g/ml whether it is a big drop, or a very small drop.

What is the effect of shape on the density of samples of the same material?

it has no effect. density of a substance is the same no matter the size or shape of the sample.

How can you find the density of a solid with a regular shape?

There is insufficient information for us to answer this question. Density = Mass / Volume. For a regular shape, the volume can be determined from a formula - which will depend on the shape. However, you still require the mass for which there is no information.

What is the Mass of asteroid 400 meters across?

That will depend on the exact shape, and the material it is made of.You can get an estimate, by assuming a spherical shape, calculating the volume, and multiplying that by some density (for example, the density of water). The actual mass may be a bit more than that if its a rocky asteroid; a bit less if it's ice, for instance.

Does a flattened pancake of clay have the same density as the same clay when rolled into a ball?

If it's not cooked it has the same density.

Why is density is a useful physical property for identifying substances?

Density is useful for identifying an unknown material because it is a physical constant. A physical constant is a unique characteristic of the material in question. This constant never change or vary with the shape or amount of the material/substance.

Under the same conditions of temperature and pressure three different samples of the same uniform substance will have the same?

Density reason is that the density of a uniform material is constant Density is independent of the size and shape of the sample.

Why drop of liquid acquire spherical shape?

A sphere has the most efficient ratio between the material's mass and its density.
