Energy is the property of a substance or a system which enables it to do work. Energy and work have the same units, Joules in the SI system. When you do work you are using energy, and if the work stores energy, this energy is then available to do future work, this is called potential energy.

The simplest definition of energy or work is that 1 Joule is the work done by a force of 1 Newton acting over a distance of 1 meter. Thermal energy can be related to mechanical energy by the equivalent that 1 calorie = 4.2 Joules, this is called the mechanical equivalent of heat.
