A ball bounces because it's shape changes when it hits another object, then it returns to it's original form, pushing itself away from the object. When a ball is cold it's molecules don't move as much, so the shape changes less when it hits an object.

Three things make a ball bounce higher:

  1. The force (speed) with which the ball strikes the ground - the greater the downward force (speed) when the ball strikes the ground, the higher the bounce.
  2. The coefficient of elasticity of the ball - a ball with a greater coefficient of elasticity will bounce higher than a ball with a lower coefficient. The coefficient of elasticity is dependent upon several things, including the material the ball is made of. An inflated ball (such as a Basketball) will have a higher coefficient of elasticity when it is inflated to a higher internal air pressure.
  3. The stiffness and hardness of the surface the ball bounces on - the stiffer and harder the surface, the higher the ball will bounce. For example, the same ball will bounce higher on a hardwood floor than it will on a turf field.

The energy in the ball is converted into other forms of energy ( sound energy/heat energy ) when it bounced on the floor.
