In 1948, the ailing Mackenzie King personally picked his minister of external affairs, Louis St Laurent, to succeed him as Prime Minister. St Laurent's dignity, personal decency, and courage, had made him popular with Canadians. He was known/ nicknamed "Uncle Louis" in the press because he was like "every ones favorite uncle."
