The collective unconscious was a term used by psychologist Karl Jung, one of the founders of psychology. It describes the really important, basic things that almost all of us as human beings take for granted but usually don't think about from day to day. For example, almost all of us believe that being human is a good thing. A large number of us believe that darkness often is a symbol of something negative, dangerous, or missing; and that day or the sun is a symbol of feeling warm, being awake, or knowing something especially important. A smile is a universal symbol of acceptance, and a frown just the opposite. These are things that we don't need to translate across cultures when we meet people from other parts of the world--they are just things that all humans take for granted. The "collective unconscious" also is very important in the work of 20th century scholars such as mythologist Joseph Campbell and many others.
