The common name for the loon varies depending on your location. In North America, it is simply known as the "Common Loon" (Gavia immer), while in Europe, it is known as the "Great Northern Diver." There are also other species of loon, such as the Pacific Loon (In Europe, the Pacific Diver), Arctic Loon (Black-throated Diver), Red-throated Loon (Red-throated Diver), etc. So make sure you know which type of loon to which you are referring.
