Additional Info on California's Native Animals
California contains the greatest number of native species in the United States. These include 51 native species of amphibians, 84 native species of reptiles, and 197 native mammal species.
Native mammals include mountain lions (aka pumas and cougars), bobcats, coyotes, gray foxes, raccoons, golden eagles, California gulls, California mule deer, gray squirrels and ground squirrels. I have included a Related Link below for the critically endangered (per the IUCN 3.1) California Channel Islands fox.
Three of the most common animals -- opossums, red foxes and brown fox squirrels -- are introduced species.
