This is a very complicated question, or it is a simple question with a very complicated answer. In the Garden of Eden, Adam's and Eve's principle activity was tending the Garden. Seeing that it was apparently a perfect place, I don't pretend to know what they actually did. But it does say something about Man's relation to the natural world around him from a biblical perspective. I suppose appreciation, preservation and protection might be three ways man could fulfill his God given place in the universe. But that is not what is happening in the 21st century. Conservative Christianity, aka the religious right, is the primary proponent of biblical teaching and tradition in the world today. It has been largely hijacked, although willingly it seems, by the political right or the extreme right wing of the Republican party. This means that there is an emphasis on exploiting Natural Resources. Many claim that this can be done without harming the environment. There is also less emphasis by this group on preventing polution of water and air.

So, it would appear that Christianity has lost its way somewhat in terms of man's place and purpose in the natural world that surrounds him.
