15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15 KJV15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. The Bible was given to us to read and learn from about the things of God. It is also a love letter to us from God our creator. He loves us and wants to share with us just like two people that love each other would want to share things with each other. Also, in order to know what God's plan is for our lives, we must read and study our Bible to know these things.
AND1Pe 3:15 But have reverence for Christ in your hearts, and honor him as Lord. Be ready at all times to answer anyone who asks you to explain the hope you have in you,
You cannot explain your hope of salvation in Christ to any one if you do not fully understand the scriptures
AND
1Pe 2:2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,
God's word - the scriptures - are like food to the christian if you want to grow as a christian you must read the scriptures.
Being a a Christian or not, you do not have an obligation to read the Bible. You simply choose whether you read it or not. Something very interesting is that a religious book can give you so many historical events that have been found as evidenced in archeological digs and the such.
Further Considerations A Christian is a follower/disciple of Christ Jesus. Jesus Himself read Holy Scripture (Luke 4:16-21), so it would seem to be logical that those following in His footsteps would do the same. To follow His teachings, presumably it would be necessary and normal to read what He taught. Reading scripture, and listening to Scripture being read was an essential part of religious life in Bible times (Acts 15:21). Knowing the scriptures was taken for granted (Matt 21:42). Personally reading God's Word was strongly encouraged from early times, it being considered a fundamental source of happiness and the key to success (Deut 17:19, Psalm 1:1-6, Joshua 1:8).
The Bible was written to be read! Most sections of the New Testament are actually copies of letters that were written to Christians in the first century, written to be read by them, and copied and circulated by them so that others could read and benefit from the admonitions and 'words of wisdom' (Colossians 4:16). Christians who carefully read scripture were highly commended (Acts 17:10-11). The Bible itself advocates that a high value be put on scripture (2 Tim 3:16-17) and that Christians should know and use God's word as they live their lives the Christian way (Ephesians 6:10-17).
THE MIND OF GOD AND THE MIND OF CHRIST
The bible encourages believers to get to know God and Christ Jesus better, and to achieve this by paying attention to the word of God (John 17:3, 2 Pet 1:1,2,19)
Interestingly, the process of reading about events creates brain activity very similar to the effect of actually experiencing them. So, when such things as the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles are read, it is very much like being there! Feelings, emotions and thinking become engaged in the matter. The reader's thoughts and attitudes are then influenced by God's word, and they can begin to see things from Christ's viewpoint. Consequently, although Christians may not fully know the mind of God, they can at least 'have the mind of Christ' (1 Cor 2:16).
