Over the years, the enemies of the catholic Church have certainly exaggerated and sometimes invented many particularly salacious and violent details of pope Alexander's life. However, even among Catholics, Rodrigo Borgia is openly considered an unworthy and evil man. His use of simony and sexual dissolution are simple facts of history that contributed to create deep divisions in Christendom. Although morally unfit as a Pope, Alexander VI is equally recognized as a capable administrator and defender of the papal state and of Rome itself, having enjoyed at times, the full support of the roman populace.
