First off, Gabriel is an angel. Angels do not look like humans; they are probably very bright, almost glowing. It must have been pretty shocking and maybe a little frightening to see one, especially for a young girl. Second, the introduction was probably awesome and maybe even a little bewildering. "Greetings you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you!" Frankly, the whole ordeal would have scared the pants right off of me. I'm guessing that Gabriel would have wanted to calm Mary down somewhat in order to get his entire message across. That's what I think.
Luke 1:26 does not specify exactly where Mary was when she received the news from the angel Gabriel. She was probably at her home in Galilee.
In the Bible, it is the angel Gabriel who is said to have spoken to Saint Joseph. Gabriel appeared in a dream to Joseph and told him not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife, for the child she was carrying was conceived by the Holy Spirit.
