The Church of England, in it's form where the monarch is the head of the church, was started when Henry VIII was trying to seek an annulment of his marriage to his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. Catherine had previously been married to Henry's older brother, Arthur, who died after 15 months of marriage. Henry decided when he became King to marry Catherine and received a Papal dispensation allowing them to do so because a passage in the Old Testament forbade a man from marrying his brother's wife. After Catherine failed to give Henry a son who lived past infancy, Henry started to question the legitimacy of their marriage, thinking that perhaps they were cursed because they went against the word of God. At the same time he fell in love with Anne Boleyn, a woman who refused to be with him unless they were married, so Henry appealed to the Pope in Rome for an annulment of his marriage from Catherine so that he could eventually marry Anne and try to produce a son. However, over the course of six years the Pope refused to give Henry the annulment and an ecclesiastical court failed to do so, so finally Henry had enough. He had been reading more and more materials against the Catholic Church written by Reformists from the continent, and decided that since he was the anointed King, that he should have to answer only to God and not to the Pope. Eventually many acts were passed in Parliament that severed any ties England had with the Pope, and made Henry the first monarch who was declared the Supreme Head of the Church.

Yes he did. He wanted to divorce his first wife but the Pope wouldn't permit it so the church was a result of his attempt to separate from Rome.
