Due to her persecution of non-Catholics, and her desire to have many burnt as heretics, she was known as 'bloody Mary'. The first in a line of very prominent executions in this manner was Lord Cobham. In those days heresy was a capital offense. The problem was, many of those burnt were only heretics in the sense that they disagreed with certain aspects of Catholic teaching or would not submit to the authority of the Pope. They were not heretics in the true sense of holding heretical doctrines like, say, Arius, who denied Jesus' divinity.
