From a research perspective, I like the story because it has led Ian Wilson to investigate the origins of this story and similar accounts in the Epic of Gilgamesh and elsewhere, and make a persuasive case in Before the Flood that they were based on folk memories of the inundation of the Black Sea around 5400 BCE.

Because, when read properly and not overlooking key points, it proves God as our Creator is in charge of everything and not man. He controls all the elements and the weather and only He is the judge of all that is seen and unseen. It show the reader that there is a way that seem right to man but in the end only leads to his demise - hence, there must be a better/right way.
Case in point, many people discount Noah being able to take all the animals of the world into this Ark - the size of a WWII Aircraft Carrier. But is this what Scripture says in Genesis 6:17-20? Consider just this for now:

Yes, it did :)
It was built on land.
No
No animal on Noah's Ark had money since animals do not know how to use money. In fact, there is no discussion of money in the Bible before Abraham proposes to the Hittites that he wishes to buy the Cave of Machpelah outright, almost ten chapters after the Noah story.
