'The word came into English from Hindi, which originates from the Persian words "shir o shekar," meaning "milk and sugar", probably from the resemblance of its smooth and rough stripes to the smooth surface of milk and bumpy texture of sugar.' - American Heritage Dictionary (4th ed.)
Calcutta cloth is not typically crinkly like seersucker. While seersucker is known for its puckered texture, created through a specific weaving technique, Calcutta cloth usually has a smoother finish. However, some variations of Calcutta cloth can have a slight texture, but it generally lacks the pronounced crinkles seen in seersucker.
"Seersucker" is ultimately from Farsi (Persian) shir o shakkar, which means "milk and sugar" (a description of the alternating stripes of the cloth). The word entered the English lexicon by way of Hindi.
Seersucker
Seersucker Thursday was created in 1996.
Absolutely. Provided that the seersucker creates an aesthetically pleasing combination with the linen. I would recommend standard seersucker (light blue and white) with a white or tan linen.

Table cloth is called table cloth because it is used to cover the table.its called a table cloth because it is a cloth that you put on a table you idiot.
I really wouldn't. seersucker is surprisingly "dressy", especially in the south (except shorts). I wouldn't wear a seersucker jacket with anything except the accompanying pants. Yes, any summer weight pants work with seersucker such as linen, cotton or tropical weight wool. Only men over the age of 55+ wear the accompanying seersucker pants. A more youthful and modern approach is to wear different pants with the jacket. I am a NYC fashion Designer so you can trust my advice.
A seersucker suit.

Yes, seersucker suits appear in "The Sound of Music." The character Captain Georg von Trapp, played by Christopher Plummer, is seen wearing a light-colored seersucker suit during the film. The fabric's distinctive texture and summer-friendly design reflect the film's setting in the scenic Austrian landscape. Seersucker suits contribute to the film's overall aesthetic, embodying a sense of style appropriate for the era.
