"Gay counseling" does not have an official definition. Fundamentally, there are two approaches:
1. One attempts to "cure" a gay person, seeing it as a disease. The vast majority of therapeutic professionals are agreed that homosexuality is not a disease, and that so-called "cures" do more harm than good. IF you are considering "curative" therapy, at least talk to a mainstream therapist before you make your decision.
2. The other counseling approach sees homosexuality as a normal part of human sexuality, and seeks to help gay people live fulfilling lives. Many gay people do need at least some counseling to get past the challenges of growing up in an overwhelmingly "heterosexist" society. For most of us, "men's groups" or "women's groups" sponsored by local gay and lesbian organizations can do the trick.
It can hurt you because it's a bigoted act, not based on anything but hate and fear.

That said, it is possible to find a marriage counselor who is perhaps popular in the gay community. It would be a good idea to ask around in Kansas by perhaps contacting the local chapter of LGB.
Group counseling is for a specific group, where general is anybody that is there.
