What Mitt Romney means is that historically, the purpose of a marriage union was to produce children. While men can remain fertile into their 70s or 80s, women typically reach menopause in their 50s. The fact that the wife my be infertile, does not negate that traditional purpose of marriage. In the context of the change in standards in 21st Century Western culture, he also means that since marriage between two people of the same sex can never produce children, there is no fundamental purpose for such a marriage. More to the point, since homosexual relationships have been forbidden by every major monotheistic religion for more than 2,000 years, he does not support changing the definition of marriage to include marriage between two people of the same sex, just because Western culture has been embracing the open expression of homosexual relationships for a few decades. He could go to court, of course, and attempt to undo whatever was done in his absence, in order to obtain any property that was his and was not liquidated to settle debts.

Non communication, too high of expectations, poor self images, resentment, the list goes on and it is so very sad because the rate of divorce in modern marriages is staggering. No one says you should stay in a marriage for the reasons from back " in the day" but marriage now is not taken as seriously as it was years ago. Responsibility for ones actions today is so down played by the media, sports figures, celebrities, and the rich in general. It is sickening because so many people buy into the crap that they bring to the institution of marriage and divorce that is not important anymore to alot of them. Not all couples have to get married to be considered important but if you do take the steps to the alter, I just wish people would take more time to work on it, as with anything worthwhile, instead of giving up or just plain making a mess of the whole family aspect. Honesty is something that apparently is a choice these days too. The two big ones are financial irresponsibility and failure to communicate adequately.
