Why is apple not a dominant provider of personal computers?
Apple, while unique in their product and their design has alienated the majority of the consumer market almost from the beginning. The company tried to set themselves apart and show their differences early on when they aired their first commercial in 1984. Apple is still the unique brand of computer that stands on its own, but it only represents 5% of the consumer market. They set themselves too far apart. Steve Jobs had a unique vision, but Bill Gates had the insight to tap into the business world by creating a product that was cheaper and more efficient. Apple had the right idea back in the eighties, but they were too sure of themselves and missed out on some opportunities to truly succeed, especially by licensing its operating system. They could have created the enterprise that Bill Gates now dominates. Apple may have coined the phrase 'personal computer', but it failed to meet most people's needs when the market was the most viable.

Your question raises a host of others, such as; what happened to the original operating system, is this a brand new hard drive, did you buy this computer at a yard sale, and, most importantly do you have the restore desk(s)? Assuming that you do, (because it is beyond this forum if you do not,) there are certain steps that must be followed. If this is a relatively new computer, and came with Windows XP, you need to put the (first, if more than one,) restore disk in the CD-ROM/R/W drive, (the one that takes music CD's), turn the computer off, and then turn it back on again. You should see a line of text when the computer comes back up, asking you what you want to do. Select "System Restore", press enter, and the rest should happen automatically. If this is an older computer, which ran on Windows 98, you will need the installtion CD-ROM or floppy disks, and the "Windows Start Up" floppy disk. Insert the Start Up disk into the floppy disk drive, start the computer, and, if your copy of Windows 98 is on a CD, select option 1 when the computer asks if it should start with CD-ROM drivers loaded. If your copy of Windows is on floppy disks, select option 2. In either case, you will see a DOS prompt in a few moments, which will look like this "A:\" At this point, either put the Windows CD in the CD drive, or disk one in the floppy drive, and type in "set up." Follow the instructions and your system will be restored. IF the above steps do not work for you, take the machine and the software to a professional.

Why was the first apple computer invented?
Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak built the company Apple to produce computers using a very "Zen" philosophy. They thought computers should be easy to use, as well as pleasing to the eye both inside and out. Interior hardware layout has always been an art to Apple, and it has served them well throughout the years and allowed them to make super-compact models such as the Mac Mini and the Macbook Air. Financial gain was another goal of the business, of course.
What is the best operating system for low end computers?
The best operating system depends on what family of operating system you wish to use. Macintosh requires a lot of resources so that is completely out of the question. The best families to look into is obviously windows, but Linux may also be a better choice. The best windows operating system that has been the most successful for working on lower end computers and surpassing "the old OS's (95, 98, ME)" is Windows XP. XP can run on even the most basic of computers. The best advice to make it run most efficiently is to max out the RAM on the motherboard.
Another alternative to a windows operating system is Linux. Pretty much any Linux 'distro' (or distribution of the operating system) can run on a PC platform with even the smallest amount of resources. I know that the recommended system requirement for Dream Linux is a 20 GB hard drive, 733 MHz processor and 128 MB of RAM.
