What is hostile architecture?
Hostile architecture, also known as defensive architecture, is a design strategy that aims to restrict certain behaviors in public spaces. The most well-known example is installing pointy studs, dubbed “anti-homeless spikes,” on benches and windowsills to make sleeping or loitering on them uncomfortable. Other methods look to deter skateboarding, littering, and public urination. Proponents say that these architectural obstacles are necessary to prevent crime and maintain order in urban areas. However, critics argue that they target vulnerable populations and create a public safety concern for all members of society, especially children, seniors, and people with disabilities.

Why doesn't the Leaning Tower of Pisa fall over?
The tower hasn’t hit the ground yet because its tapered and slightly curved shape keeps its center of gravity fairly low. That means it can tip quite a bit before toppling. In a more poetic sense, though, the tower was falling over for a long time—albeit very slowly. Its tilt, which was first noticed shortly after construction began in 1173, kept increasing until 1990. That’s when engineers declared that, at a tilt of more than five degrees, it was in danger of collapsing. A team then figured out how to correct the lean, bringing it back to a safe angle. Since then, it’s been getting straighter, believe it or not. The residual effects from the construction meant the angle had decreased another four centimeters by 2018.

What makes up rebar?
Rebar is a steel bar or mesh of steel wires used in reinforced concrete, and reinforced masonry structures which helps to strengthen the concrete under tension. Steel is melted down to liquid form on extreme amount of heat and then to give the rebar its shape, the liquid steel is pulled through small round openings. The developers choose to purchase higher-grade material for safety which prevent the concrete form from cracking. After the steel has its shape, the manufacturer will make the twists, and grooves on the metal to check if it will stay firmly in place inside the structure. The ends of reinforced metal bars are covered with plastic caps to prevent harm to construction workers as they are dangerous while installing. Now rebar is distributed from manufacturer to the job site and then the product is bent to the proper specs with the help of specialty hydraulic benders and cutters. There are only a few type of rebar that can be welded and that is the reason many construction companies use wire and coupling splices to join the ends together.

How do you find a house plan?
House plans are available on the Internet, in books, and in magazines. There are plan books (library and bookstore) that will show you 100 designs and then you can order floorplans from them. The problem with ordering floorplans out of a book or magazine is that you won't get all the construction plans you need (or your local building department requires). Floorplans also need to be specific for your building site. Of course, the best thing to do is go to an architect.
