An EMT may administer aspirin to a patient if?

Aspirin is given to people by EMS providers when there is a suspicion of a heart attack.
In most heart attacks, blockage of one or more of the coronary arteries initially causes pain and, as the blockage worsens, can lead to cardiac arrest. One of the most common forms of blockage is by a clot on the sides of the blood vessels.
Aspirin acts by making the platelets in your blood less "sticky" so that they won't attach to existing clots, thereby preventing the clot in the heart from getting worse. This gives the person more time to get to a definitive care facility and get the clot treated.

No you shouldn't give any aspirin to children under 16 because it can cause a disease called Reye's syndrome which damages the liver and brain. Although this is a rare disease, it has a fatality rate of about 50% so its just not worth the risk. Other painkillers such as Ibuprofen and Paracetamol (calpol) are safer and work better as a pain killer anyway. Can you give your pit bull aspirin to reduce a fever?

no!!

go to your vet, they will have a solution!!

**Correction/Improvement**

It is difficult to know whether a dog has a fever or not. A dry nose does not indicate fever. The most accurate indicator of a fever in a dog is the old fashioned thermometer up the rear.

However, one dose of aspirin will not harm your dog and may make it more comfortable while waiting for your vet appt.

A typical aspirin dose is 5 to 10 mg per pound (10 to 20 mg/kg) twice daily for dogs. Always give with food.
